Jill Scott "The Real Thing: Words And Sounds Vol. 3"
$11.92
Before you peel the cellophane off The Real Thing: Words and Sounds, Vol. 3, check out the back cover photo. In it, Jill Scott sits slumped on a floor in a bathrobe and slippers with a notebook clutched to her chest. It's an image meant to tell you something about just how real these 15 songs keep it--no pretenses here, just an artist doling out bits of her soul--but it also accurately captures the diary-like vibe of the music. Though there's nothing in Jill Scott's catalog that lacks for intimacy, Vol. 3 puts honesty and introspection on lock. From the cool opening drums of "Let It Be," to the swollen soul of "Hate on Me," to the sexed-up "Crown Royal"--this disc's entirely too brief best track, Scott weaves through the music like a woman who's taken her time contemplating what feelings ought to sound like. Not just mood-wise, but style-wise. The way-lyrical, late-night-sounding song, "Epiphany," hints at something a later track, "Wanna be Loved," lays out clearly: In addition to her spectacular singing, Scott's got the goods to seduce her fans as a rapper. She's the real thing, and she's also well-rounded. --Tammy La Gorce
Jill Scott "Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds, Vol. 2"
$4.70
While most neo-soulsters crank out albums like their hip-hop counterparts, Jill Scott takes a more traditional approach to her craft. Four years after the release of her debut, Who Is Jill Scott, Words & Sounds Vol. 1, Scott returns with the masterful Beautifully Human: Words & Sounds Vol. 2. The album features a collection of lush and hypnotic songs that will make you want to fall in love, live life, and be a better person all at the same time. Lead single "Golden" is a prime example of this. Set to a midtempo groove made for the dance floor, "Golden" is a shiny, beautifully-written narrative about living life to its fullest. The old-school R&B ballad vibe of "Petition" is reminiscent of Minnie Ripperton or early Chaka Khan. However, "Bedda at Home" is anything but laid back. Combining elements of jazz, soul, and old-school hip-hop breakbeats, Scott extols the greatness of her man with a swagger that can only be described as cool. Other highlights include "Family Reunion" and the socially conscious "Rasool."
The album's only flaw may be that it ends too soon, but then again it's always better to leave a listener wanting more. For Scott, being "Beautifully Human" means just that--finding the allure in all that life has to offer and that's well worth the wait. --Rashaun Hall
Anyone who's seen Jill Scott live knows she's the real deal--a down-home diva more concerned with working a melody or getting her groove on than Britney-fied glitz or Badu-style pride. So it's no surprise that the singer's warmth translates beautifully on Experience, a collection of 11 live tracks recorded at Washington D.C.'s Constitution Hall, plus 6 previously unreleased cuts. With the Headhunters-esque intro of "A Long Walk" that opens the double disc, Scott and her more-than-capable backing band, Fatback Taffy, establish a heartfelt rapport with the audience that comes through not only in their reinterpretations of the singer's tunes, but in the pauses in between. This is apparent throughout, like when Scott notices a pregnant woman in the crowd and says with a giggle, "I see that baby in that belly over there--what's that baby doing?" Or when the Philly native belts the bridge on "Love Rain," intoning the line "You broke me, but now I'm healing" in lush, redemptive timbres. As for the new studio tracks, Scott offers up a set of solid originals that should leave fans plenty satisfied till her new album drops. Tracks like "Gimme," a funk-heavy dance track, and the drum & bass-driven "Gotta Get Up," are about as infectious as they come, while "Be Ready" features Scott's voice at its most gorgeous, her rich alto punctuating the song's syncopations with grace and ease. --Sylvia W. Jill Scott "Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds, Vol. 1"
$7.79
Jill Scott's debut, Who Is Jill Scott?, is a luscious portrait of the artist as a grown woman. In R&B, black femininity has often been reduced to two dimensions: sex and materialism. But Scott lives in 3-D, and it shows in her voluptuous songwriting. She combines a beautiful voice with an extreme generosity of spirit, making her music a dreamy, soulful delight. Lizz Mendez Berry
